MARVIN TERBAN’S BIO
Called a "master of children's wordplay" by ALA Booklist and "Mr. English for Kids" by the Children's Book-of-the-Month Club, Marvin Terban is Scholastic’s “Professor Grammar.” He has written thirty-eight books for students and teachers, three of which have sold over a million copies each. He is widely recognized as an expert in teaching English language arts to children. No author has written more books directly related to the basic English skills stressed in the Common Core State Standards than he has. Throughout his long career as an author, he has kept his even longer day job as a language arts teacher in New York. He is known for his lively, engaging, and humorous presentations at schools, colleges, and educational conferences all over the world.
WHO SAYS GRAMMAR CAN’T BE FUN? THE FUTURE OF ENGLISH AND THE COMMON CORE
In this fast-moving presentation, Marvin Terban will cover three important topics: 1) What is happening to the English language in the 21st Century (It’s under attack!), 2.) What the Common Core is asking us to teach our students about English, and 3.) How to reconcile the two and still keep smiling. He will also reveal the three most important lessons he’s learned about teaching grammar. (Hint: One of them is humor!) Laugh as you learn how to avoid the pitfalls and idiosyncrasies of our mother tongue. (Not Marvin’s father’s tongue. He came from Ukraine.)
